Sandys Parish Council Scholarships

The Sandys Parish Council is proud to support the educational journey of our young people. Each year, we offer scholarships to students who have been accepted to an accredited college or university.

Our awards are primarily intended for undergraduate students, though applications from those pursuing postgraduate studies may also be considered.

Scholarships are granted with financial need as the main consideration, while academic achievement also plays an important role. Every application is reviewed with care, and our scholarships sub-committee members take part in the decision-making process.

Scholarships for studies beginning in September are typically awarded in early August. Applications will be available through the Bermuda Scholarships portal — please check back for updates.

Ieysha M. Berkeley

Ieysha M. Berkeley is a postgraduate student pursuing an MSc in Precision Cancer Medicine at the University of Oxford. Her academic journey began at CedarBridge Academy in Bermuda, where she graduated in 2009 after briefly relocating to Granada, Spain, to study under the International Baccalaureate program. In 2016, Ieysha moved to the UK, and in 2019, she made the decision to return to education to pursue her long-standing passion for cancer research.

She began her formal scientific training at London South East Colleges, earning a foundation degree in Biomedical Science while serving as the student representative for her cohort. In her final year, she was honoured as the Higher Education Student of the Year and obtained a Certificate in Mental Health Awareness. Ieysha then completed her BSc in Biomedicine at the University of Greenwich, where she carved her path into cancer medicine under the mentorship of Professor Lauren Pecorino, a leading voice in cancer biology.

Throughout this time, Ieysha self-funded her education while working at Northshore Medical and Aesthetics Centre in Bermuda, balancing professional responsibilities with academic progress. Now at Oxford, her research interests focus on targeted cancer therapies and translational oncology, with a specific goal of contributing to the field of preventative cancer medicine.

Her journey has been shaped by resilience, vision, and a deep commitment to impact—supported by the unwavering love of her parents, Cammie and James Simmons, and her partner, Shalitta Bond. Ieysha is honoured to receive this scholarship in recognition of her dedication to advancing the future of cancer research.

I have lived in Sandys Parish my entire life. From my early years at Somerset Primary, to Sandys Middle School and my involvement with Somerset Cricket Club's youth football program, I’ve been shaped by the values of unity and mentorship that define the Sandys community. These early influences sparked my passion for serving others and ultimately led me to pursue a career in mental health.

I’m currently completing my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Stevenson University. My dissertation focuses on the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and symptoms of anxiety and depression in Bermudian adults. This research reflects my commitment to better understanding and addressing the mental health needs within our Island.

As I look ahead, I remain committed to giving back to Bermuda, and particularly to Somerset, in every way I can. My long-term goal is to return home and provide accessible, culturally responsive psychological services to children, families, and underserved populations. I hope to play an active role in increasing mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and empowering the next generation.

Thank you for awarding me The Sandys Parish Council Scholarship. Your continued investment in young people like myself makes a meaningful difference, and I’m truly grateful.
